What is Obamacare?
Obamacare is the commonly used name for the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Signed on March 23, 2010 and championed by U.S. President Barack Obama, it is a healthcare reform law designed to make medical insurance more accessible and affordable for everyone.
Monthly Premium
It’s the fixed amount you pay to the insurance company each month to keep your coverage active. If you stop making payments, your insurance will be canceled.
Deductible
It works just like your car insurance deductible. You must pay this initial amount for medical services before your insurance starts covering costs. For example, if your deductible is $1,000, you pay the first $1,000 and then your insurance begins to cover expenses.
Copays
It’s a fixed payment, like $20, that you pay to your doctor each time you receive a service. The copay is just a portion—your insurance covers the rest.
Coinsurance
It’s a percentage, like 30%, that you pay from the total cost of a service. For example, if the bill is $100, you pay $30 and your insurance pays $70.

HMO
Health Maintenance Organization
You must choose a primary care physician (PCP) within the plan’s network. All your care must be coordinated and approved by your PCP. It only covers in-network services, except for emergencies. Lower costs but less flexibility.
PRO
Preferred Provider Organization
You can choose doctors and specialists both in and out of the plan’s network. Referrals are not required, but out-of-network costs are higher. Ideal for those who want flexibility and more options.
POS
Point of Service
It combines features of HMO and PPO plans, allowing you to see in-network doctors to save money, and some out-of-network providers with referrals. It’s a flexible and affordable option for those looking for a balance between cost and available choices.
EPO
Exclusive Provider Organization
It covers services only within the plan’s network, except for emergencies. You cannot use out-of-network providers, which helps keep costs down. It’s ideal for those looking for lower rates and well-organized care.

Access for everyone
People seeking comprehensive coverage
Health insurance plans under the ACA cover essential health benefits, making them ideal for those seeking comprehensive coverage that includes hospital care, preventive services, maternity care, and more.
Self-employed individuals or low-income families
The program offers income-based subsidies, which means that if your household income falls within certain limits, you may qualify for significant financial assistance to help cover your premiums and out-of-pocket costs.
Young Adults
The law allows young adults to stay on their parents’ health insurance until age 26, providing an affordable coverage option.
People without health insurance
If you currently don’t have health insurance through your employer or another government program, you are eligible to enroll in Obamacare.
Self-employed workers
If you’re self-employed, a business owner, or an independent contractor, you can access medical coverage through Obamacare as long as you don’t have a health insurance plan provided by an employer.
People with pre-existing medical conditions
The ACA prohibits insurance companies from denying coverage due to pre-existing conditions, allowing people with chronic or pre-existing medical conditions to be eligible for coverage.
